Born in 1937, married with four children, Jean Rouquerol got his doctorate in the Sorbonne (Paris) in 1964 and joined the staff of the CNRS in Marseille in 1966. There, he launched, with his wife, Prof. Françoise Rouquerol, a research group on the thermal transformation and adsorptive properties of powders and porous solids, with special emphasis on new techniques of thermal analysis (like Controlled Rate Thermal Analysis) and microcalorimetry. He was head of the CNRS Thermodynamics and Microcalorimetry Center in Marseille (1990-2001)and he is now "Directeur de Recherche" Emérite in the "MADIREL" laboratory (Divided Materials, Coatings and Electroceramics), shared between CNRS and Aix Marseille University. He chaired the IUPAC Commission on Colloid and Surface Chemistry (1991-1994) and the IUPAC Sub-Committee on the Characterization of Porous Solids (1985-1994). He is or has been member of the Editorial or Advisory Board of six journals. He was President of AFCAT (French Association for Calorimetry and Thermal Analysis) between 1985 and 1989 and of Eurosolid (European Association on the Reactivity of Solids) between 1997 and 2000.

Within the sphere of ICTAC, Jean Rouquerol was successively ICTA member #5 (in 1968!), Chairman of the Scientific Commission (1985-1996), ICTAC Vice-President and Chairman of the Working Group on CRTA (1996-2000), President (2000-2006), Past-President (since 2006) and ICTAC Honorary Member (since 2010).
