Éder T. G. Cavalheiro was born and educated in Ribeirão Preto/SP, Brazil (1962), obtaining his bachelors degree and teaching license in Chemistry from the Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras de Ribeirão Preto (FFCLRP-USP) in 1983. After graduating he moved to São Carlos/SP and obtained his Masters degree in Chemistry from the Instituto de Física e Química de São Carlos (IFQSC-USP) in 1987. His Master's thesis involved the equilibrium of sulfite-cobalt(II) complexes in aqueous medium. After obtaining his Masters he continued to work within the department as an Auxiliary and Assistant Professor between 1987 and 1989.

After a further four years working with a private company in Joinville/SC, Brazil, Cavalheiro returned to São Carlos and concluded his doctoral studies in Chemistry (Analytical Chemistry) in 1995. His doctoral thesis was dedicated to the preparation and characterization of metallic dithiocarbamates by several techniques including TGA and DSC. During this period he also worked as an Assistant Professor within the Chemistry Department of the Universidade Federal de São Carlos, (1994-2002) Since 2002 he held the position of Associate Professor at the Instituto de Química de São Carlos (IQSC-USP).

His research interests include the thermal analysis of biopolymers (chitosan, alginic acid) derivatives, the thermal behavior of metallic complexes, pharmaceuticals and food additives. In the electroanalysis field he pursues the development of electrode materials and their applications to pharmaceuticals and biologically relevant molecules. His research group LATEQS, established officially in 1998, has authored almost 100 journal publications and presented over 250 communications at various congresses and scientific meetings.

His involvement in thermal analysis associations started in 2000 when Profs. Massao Ionashiro and Lázaro Moscardini invited him to become a member of the ABRATEC (Brazilian Thermal Analysis Association) council. Within ABRATEC he has served as Secretary (2002-2004) and Vice-President (2005-2006), both positions under the presidency of Prof. Antonio Gouveia de Souza. He was elected to the position of ICTAC Secretary during the ESTAC 9 congress held in Poland in 2006.
