Objectives:

Efforts are focused on investigation of the possibility of using TA methods for making time-life predictions. Committee LTPM works closely with Committee Kinetics.

Activities/Actions

- a round test trial with simulated and measured data, for comparing the calculation methodologies used by various groups for the same input data has been done.

The study was performed on different materials, viz.: polymers and energetic materials for which DSC and TGA data acquired at minimum 4 heating rates were available on request. The demand of the exercise was to predict the reaction progress of each substance from the ASCII files under the following temperature conditions for 3 years:

(A) daily temperature variations of 25 +/- 10°C
(B) daily temperature variations of 50 +/- 30°C
(C) and at three constant temperatures: 25°C, 50°C and 80°C.

Results
The results of the kinetic analysis carried out by various participants (more than 15) were significantly different, with corresponding large differences between the predicted values.

It appears evident from this round test that the calculation methodology for making predictions may introduce uncontrollable errors when using TA data acquired under unknown conditions.

A second exercise is proposed to be run with distributing the same materials to participants with the requirement of measuring them according to their own experimental methodology and predicting the reaction progress under various temperature profiles.
